The Rise of The Web3 Business Mindset
by: DamonNeedsToCreate
Not all traditional companies are run by devious supervillains trying to gobble up every soul into their capital slavery machine. But there is a general vibe that the bigger the company, the greedier and more self-serving it can become. The reality is that larger the mega corporations might not be any better or worse than others but they do seem to be gobbling up more for their own growth. And those gains seem to be funneled more and more toward the top few in the organization.
These traditional companies and methods are considered Web2 if you are talking to anyone in the now-forming Web3 universe. Web2 meaning things that existed or operated in the version of the internet where centralized entities own and control the space. Basically anything that isn’t on Web3, or the blockchain. So Web3 builders imagine a space where the users own the space they are using.
Of course this isn’t really the case for most Web3 projects right now, but it is at least their proclaimed vision for the future. And this is the Web3 business mindset that I’ve been experiencing a lot lately. The best way to describe it is to say that it is collaborative and openly transparent.
In my experience in business of the past, I have been warned that I am too open and too trusting. That I “give away too much of my position” in a negotiation or discussion. I have always pushed back on that with the logic that if I’m upfront and honest, then whoever I’m speaking with has to make a choice to either do the same or take advantage of my trust. I might lose in that interaction or partnership, but that choice will also determine if I work with that person again.
From what I have seen in the interactions between the smartest people I can find in Web3, they are speaking and trying to open a new way of thinking in business. And it is damn refreshing. Recently I was on a call for a very large partnership and the language was clearly about helping each other find the best path for both. There were uncomfortable moments and emotions, but even those were spoken about in a transparent manner.
I cannot say if this desire in me to pull away from what has “been the way” for so long is going to take hold in our everyday business practices, but I can confirm that within Web3 building, it is happening every day. If you ever wanted to change the way business was conducted on a global scale, this is the time and this is how it is done.
By exposing this type of interaction happening around us, and openly saying that we want more of it, we are voting for what will be the future of our business relationships.
Recognise and praise the things we value and clearly point out what we want to avoid. How you handle the next couple of years of this meta-expansion really will affect where we all go next.
